Avatar is nothing but a Nicktoon. The fact that so many people mistake it for an anime is silly, because really, how many animes do you know of that need to be dubbed for Japanese audiences?

Cartoons in general are animation. Anime to me is more of a mental state of the picture rather than typical toons. I personaly dont like Anime and Manga i find it unapealing to my tastes if i wanted to have a mix of seriousness and some laughs id watch an action/comedy like Transformers.. But you know there are some great ones i have seen. I can realy name them but something about a girl going through a tunnel and apearing in the freacky world with flying castle.. that was a nice Anime =)..at least i assume it was anime.

Uhm. No.
That's why you call an Anime "Anime", and not "cartoon". Anime = Asian cartoon, more or less.
Same as you shouldn't call manga a "comic book".

As i said i dont know much about Anime. To me anything drawn by hand is just a cartoon. But thats my opinion.
In that case ive seen plenty of "Anime" but ive seen movie length ones, not series.
But i completely agree with Wiki defenition and wont go against it.

A square is always a rectangle, but a rectangle is not always a square.
Substitute "square" and "rectangle" with "anime" and "cartoon", respectively.

i never said i disagree, now did i. Im just saying, to me anythign drawn is a cartoon. Its an opinionated response so shouldnt be a focus of conversion to monotoneous thought. i Also stated that i agree with Wiki defenition.
Your example was a classification was it not? Square is in family of rectangular figures. But not all rectangles are square.
TO ME Anime is a cartoon. Its just not every cartoon can be classified as Anime.
Pretty much what you have said.

Anime is just the japanese word for animation. For a lot of people not from Japan, anime refers to the style of the character's looks.

I never liked the Gundam stuff, I really liked Gundam Wing when it was on Toonami I think and Endless Waltz was a nice ending. So I tried to watch the others and couldn't get into them. Giant Robot Anime heh.
There's also some less action, slice of life or comedy anime like Azumanga Daioh or Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or Kashimashi: Girl meets Girl. They toss in some sci-fi and drama in these and Haruhi has a crazy following if you look it up.

I have wanted to get into Full Metal Alchemist (the manga) for so long, but the chapters are so darn long and there is so much missed. I basically read through wikipedia and saw the movie. Amazing storyline and even better twists and turns.
I also wanted to get into Deathnote, but the storyline was actually not as captivating as I thought it would be.
I would love to read through the earlier bleach mangas and even more one piece mangas (which is probably the best manga I have to read), but I never have the time or patience to - i basically wikied the past events. It sucks when you don't catch the train early enough because then you are stuck not wanting to read through all of that when you know what the current storyline is.
Naruto is the only mange I currently read and is currently up to date in. The past couple of chapters have been absolutely amazing!

Evangelion is coming back to the big screen, it seems a remake of the series:

Ghost in the Shell, and everything Shirow-san does, is great. The manga is full of amazing stuff. If you liked the 1st gig of Stand Alone Complex, you should watch the 2nd one which is much better. And don't miss Solid State Society which has among the most amazing CGIs out there.

It's a "genre" and sometimes it goes beyond the cartoon medium, see Ghost in the Shell which mixes CGI with animated drawing.

There's nothing like the black&white of "kid" vs "adult" animes, there's a range of works. Plus some of the Studio Ghibli movies (e.g. Shihiro's, Totoro) are clearly on both sides as they can be interpreted, and enjoyed, both ways. Which is a fantastic movie to enjoy with your kids (if you have any).
A lot of the "more serious" animes have much more challenging content than many TV series and movies. This genre is appealing to me because they innovate a lot, although sometimes I regret the ridiculous of showing women's curve...

Very hardcore anime.
Absolutely agree, the intro brought back such good memories. Intellectually challenging if you're interested in psycho-sociology.
Serial Experiment Lain is another one of the "serious" anime, darker and more centred on the psycho of the main character. In a lighter mood, watch Shirow's Ghost Hound.
And since I mention Shirow, if you love aquatic themes, watch his beautiful Real Drive.

Movie has nothing to do with the manga. You should definitely read through it when you get the chance.

Yeah, that one, while popular, certainly isn't for everyone. Lots of talking and complicated plot.

You don't need to know anything about what happened earlier in Bleach, because the author himself forgets what he wrote and just doodles what he feels like doodling in his spare time (by his own admission). One chapter a character may say something, and then a few chapters later the same or a closely related character will say something completely contradictory out of nowhere. Kubo is a pretty shitty writer. Bleach is all about big swords and people getting cut up; there's nothing else to it.
One Piece is okay, aside from every fight being the same thing (I punch you, you do some freaky shit, I punch you harder, you lose). At least Oda puts some time into developing his characters and tying different threads of the plot together.

Aside from that Danzo bullshit, I mostly agree. Kakashi Hatake for Hokage, seriously. Doesn't make much sense that everyone was rooting for him until Danzo stood up and said "NO MAKE ME LEADER", at which point they all agreed without any contention.
It's a shame that the anime is so terrible, though, as that turns a lot of people away from the series in general, manga included. Granted, Part 1 was pretty balls to begin with, but Part 2 turned things around in the series' favor.

Dreamrunner, have you had a chance to see Cromartie high school? It has a few more sophisticated comedy elements as well as low-brow stuff. The animation style also shies away from the big eyes you commonly see. You might find it to have a few redeeming qualities.
12 kingdoms is also pretty mature if you get a chance to see it. It starts out based in a high school (almost can't avoid that) but quickly turns into something more. The main character also has some inner conflicts that she has to work out as the story progresses.
